Office of Admissions and Financial Aid
Applicants must complete the on-line American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application at www.aamc.org between June 1 and October 15. Application extensions will not be granted beyond the October 15 deadline. Verified AMCAS applicants will receive an e-mail to access the on-line Penn supplemental application and will have access to the on-line status page to review the progress of their application.
Applications will be processed upon the receipt of the following required materials:
- supplemental application
- non-refundable application/processing fee
- MCAT scores
- required letters of recommendation
All required materials must be received by November 15 in the Office of Admissions. Required letters of recommendation must be received at AMCAS by 5:00 p.m. EST (not postmarked).
Letters of Recommendation
Perelman School of Medicine participates in the AMCAS Letters of Evaluation/Recommendation service. All letters, required, and additional, must be submitted to AMCAS. To satisfy the letter of recommendation requirement, letters must be submitted from any institution in which you are currently enrolled, have completed a program or have received a degree. The following options fulfill letters of recommendation requirement:
- Committee letter/letter packet from a pre-health advisor or career service office, with or without, additional letters attached. Letters from your school's pre-health advisor or career services office are preferred.
- A minimum of 3 letters from faculty members who know you well, at least one of whom represents a science faculty member with whom you have taken courses.
- Letters must be on official stationery and submitted to AMCAS by the recommender.
- We encourage all applicants to request that their letters of recommendation be submitted to AMCAS as early as possible in the process in order to fulfill the letter of recommendation requirement. All required letters of recommendation must be received at AMCAS by November 15, 5:00 p.m. EST.
- Additional letters of recommendation can be submitted during the application process and will be posted to your status page upon receipt.
- Applicants who have previously applied to the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine must resubmit required letters of recommendation through AMCAS.
An application fee of $80 is charged to each applicant for admission. This fee is not refundable.
AAMC Fee Assistance program (FAp)
The School will waive the application fee only for an applicant who meets the AAMC Fee Assistance Program (FAP) requirements. In order to be eligible for the fee waiver, the FAP application must be completed and approved by AAMC either prior to taking the MCAT or prior to submitting the AMCAS application. The FAP must be received by AMCAS no later than three weeks before the deadline for the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The deadline for all applications is October 15 annually.
The completed application goes through a series of competitive reviews which may take from one to three months. Interviews are by invitation of the Committee on Admissions, and candidates will be notified by the Office of Admissions if an interview is granted. The interview program will occur on select weekdays from late September into mid January. Combined degree interviews are scheduled by graduate group in conjunction with medical school interviews.
The choice of students is made on the basis of the opinion of the Committee on Admissions regarding the applicant's character, ability, fitness to pursue the study of medicine, and promise for the future. This is determined by many factors, including the academic standards of the college at which the applicant prepared, performance in academic courses, the record of activity in extracurricular college and community affairs, Medical College Admission Test scores, and information offered by the applicant's college faculty. The Committee on Admissions has one annual selection date, which occurs in March. Additional offers of admission are made periodically from the waitlist through the summer months.
All applicants who are admitted are required to send a deposit of $100 to reserve a place in the class. This deposit is applied to the fall semester's bill, and is fully refundable until May 15.
Early Decision Program
Penn/Perelman has a small, selective Early Decision admissions program. Successful EDP candidates at Penn should meet the median GPA (3.83) and MCAT (37) scores of the entering class. All EDP applications must be complete with all data including MCAT's by August 1.
Only a very small number of students apply through the EDP program and we recommend that applicants considering EDP admission contact the school for advice and viability before submitting the the AMCAS application with the EDP designation. Candidates should consult with the Office of Admissions prior to June 15.
Admission with Advanced Standing
The Perelman School of Medicine does not have an advanced standing admissions program. Please refer to the AAMC and their website for institutions who will accept transfer students.
Pennsylvania Medical Practices Act of 1985
Effective January 1, 1986, the Pennsylvania Medical Practices Act of 1985 prohibits the Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Education and Licensure from issuing a license or certificate to "an applicant who has been convicted of a felony under the act of April 14, 1972 (P.L. 233, No. 64), known as The Controlled Substance, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act, or of an offense under the laws of another jurisdiction which if committed in this Commonwealth would be a felony under The Controlled Substance, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act."
