Module 5

Electives, SElectives, and scholarly pursuit
final 16 months

Sub-internships: 4 weeks. Increased responsibility for patient care that allows students to focus on general medicine, general pediatrics or emergency medicine.

Five advanced clinical electives: 20 weeks.

Scholarly Pursuit: minimum 12 weeks. In conjunction with a faculty member, students design and undertake a research project in the lab, clinic or community and present their work in a formal paper.

Year out students may be exempt from Scholarly Pursuit (e.g. MD-PhD, dual degree, year out research).

Frontiers in Medical Science: 4 weeks. These intense seminars, lasting one to two weeks each, emphasize "translational medicine," presenting the latest advances in biomedical science within the context of their relevance to medical practice.

Flexible/Open time: 24 weeks. Customize your curriculum, career goals, and personal life here. This time permits students to focus their careers interests and delve deeply into them in preparation for residency and or master's program.

USMLE Step 1 study: 4 weeks (included in flexible/open time).

Grading is Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail

the unscheduled time allows students to pursue a certificate, specific dual degrees or a short-term project in global health, in preventive, community or public health medicine or in health policy and planning. clinical electives can be taken during this time throughout the united states and at international sites.

Module 6

Professionalism and humanism
August, Year 1 - May, Year 4

Sessions offer experiences to preserve and promote the development of humanism, multi-culturalism and professionalism, the cultivation of medical collegiality and the development of the doctor-patient relationship.

Clinical patient interaction in a hospital setting begins immediately in year one.

Courses offer a confidential and safe setting to address clinical and student issues, patient safety, and cost of care.

Sessions develop essential leadership and teaching skills.

Grading is Pass/Fail

Small group format throughout the curriculum encourages discussion and builds supportive relationships among group members.
