Evaluation and Degree Requirements

System of Evaluation

Curriculum 2000® uses an Honors/Pass/Fail system of evaluation, except during Module 1, when only Pass/Fail is used. Multiple assessments are used in the evaluation process including traditional examinations, presentations, standardized patients, clinicals skills assessments, simulations, OSCE, projects and papers, and practical exams.

Statement of Requirements for the M.D. Degree

Students are awarded the M.D. degree, by vote of the faculty, when they have: (1) achieved the educational goals of the curriculum, (2) developed the intellectual, interpersonal professionalism, and technical skills required of a physician, (3) attained a level of clinical judgment which warrants confidence in their independent professional opinion, (4) demonstrated a sense of responsibility to patients, and (5) complied with the school's standards of conduct and academic integrity. It is required that students successfully complete the required curriculum and elective courses.

Step 1, Step 2-Clinical Knowledge, and Step 2-Clinical Skills are required for graduation. However, promotion and graduation are not contingent on receiving a passing score. Students who choose career paths other than practicing clinical medicine may petition for a waiver from the Student Standards Committee.

Applicants are advised that the curriculum requires some academic experiences that involve use of animal tissue. Applicants should also be aware that training in medicine may involve risks to one's own health, such as in situations involving infectious diseases. While all students' customs and practices are respected, medical education includes weekends and holidays and caring for all patients.

The faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine reserve the right to change the curriculum, methods of evaluation, and requirements for graduation at any time.
