2008 Sylvan M. Cohen Annual Retreat with Poster Session on Aging
The 2008 Sylvan M. Cohen Annual Retreat with Poster Session on Aging took place May 6, 2008 in Houston Hall here on Penn's campus.
Our focus for 2008 was on healthy brain aging.
The IOA invited several prominent speakers in the field to serve as our "Healthy Brain Aging Team" to provoke and enrich discussion of this critical topic - of particular importance here in Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with its already sizable and ever-growing population of aging adults.
Marcelle Morrison-Bogorad, PhD, Director of the Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging Program at the National Institute on Aging, addressed the question of why healthy brain aging does matter and gave an overview of where the science stands regarding healthy brain aging.
Marilyn Albert, PhD, Director of the Division of Cognitive Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University, tackled vascular risks and their impact on healthy brain aging.
Carl Cotman, PhD, Director of the Institute for Brain Aging and Dementia, at the University of California, Irvine, walked us through the ongoing research into how physical activity impacts healthy brain aging.
Hugh Hendrie, MB, ChB, DSc, Center Scientist at the Indiana University Center for Aging Research, discussed the new national roadmap to maintain cognitive health, "The Healthy Brain Initiative," the collaborative effort from the CDC and the Alzheimer’s Association, and shared information from a recent review of cardiovascular risk factors and incident Alzheimer's disease.
