Destination Health Care: Penn Medicine and the Roberts Proton Therapy Center
Penn’s preeminence as a health care facility is well known. With the 2009 opening of the Roberts Proton Therapy Center, the Penn family and the world will have access to the most compassionate, integrated, and technologically advanced cancer care available at the Abramson Cancer Center.  Learn more about proton therapy and Penn’s leadership in the most promising medical care.

The Impact of Science, Technology and Medicine on International Relations
We will discuss the impact of several U.S, government initiatives including the international outreach program of the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, which recommends policies on such questions as how to prevent published research in biotechnology from aiding terrorism without slowing scientific progress, and the Department of Defense Biological Cooperative Threat Reduction program, which addresses international control of the spread of potentially dangerous pathogens.

Autism Spectrum Disorder: From Genetics to Community Intervention
How does a great academic medical center like Penn take emerging basic science and translate it into new clinical therapies and cures? This panel will review each linked step in Penn Medicine's work in autism from genetic discovery, to enhanced early diagnosis to a landmark study currently underway in the Philadelphia public school system.

Practical Tips for Successful Aging  
Drs. Trojanowski and Lee will brief us on their progress towards understanding the causes of aging and how these findings will translate into improved diagnoses, earlier interventions, and improved care for Americans of all ages. Learn strategies we can use that might delay the onset of such devastating neurodegenerative diseases as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and related disorders, as well as tips for promoting healthy brain aging and memory.

The debate over healthcare reform in the United States centers around questions of access, fairness, efficiency, quality, and sustainability. Come discuss with our panel of leaders in the healthcare industry the potential impact President Obama and the new Congress may have on healthcare reform.

See how the use of simulation technology, standardized patients, multi-media workshops and team-based learning have transformed educational programs for preparing students to be physicians in the 21st century.

Robotic Prostatectomy: Where we came from and where we’re going.
Dr. David Lee is one of the busiest robotic prostatectomy surgeons in the country.  He will present an overview of the history of robotic prostatectomy, describe the current status, and look into the future of what's to come. The audience may also have access to a robotic surgical system so that they can get hands on with the robot.

Building Blocks of a Tax-Wise Estate Plan
Hear an overview of common issues arising in the estate planning process, along with an explanation of the current status of the Federal Estate Tax and basic techniques for minimizing its impact.

All alumni and guests are invited! Kick off Medical Alumni Weekend with Dean Rubenstein, medical alumni, School of Medicine faculty and students as we celebrate our rich tradition of alumni involvement in the School of Medicine and those who make a difference. The evening will also provide special recognition for those receiving the Distinguished Graduate Award and the Alumni Service Award.

Trip to the Please Touch Museum
For our alumni with young children! Alumni and their families will love the newly redesigned Please Touch Museum. With hands-on exhibits and demonstrations ranging from a play hospital to Alice in Wonderland's rabbit hole, kids will enjoy this larger-than-life playhouse in Fairmount Park's Memorial Hall.

A shuttle to the museum will be provided.

The Business of Medicine: Venture Capital in the Current Economic Climate
The pharmaceutical industry is facing greater challenges than ever before with looming patent expirations, emerging drugs meeting a far more austere FDA, growing media and public scrutiny and dissatisfaction, and probable future reimbursement pressures amidst a bleak economy. Leaders of the health science industry come together to discuss the current outlook and what opportunities there may be for academic, industry, and investor collaboration to finance biomedical innovation in the coming years.

Botswana-UPenn Partnership: Linking a Nation and a University
Dr. Harvey Friedman will lead a panel of residents and students in a discussion of their experiences on clinical rotation in Botswana and provide an overview of Penn’s educational, clinical, and research activities there.

The Psychological Toll of the Current Economic Crisis
With the current economy being anything but stable, people are noticing fluctuations in more than their bank accounts. Dr. Reed Goldstein, a psychologist at Pennsylvania Hospital, will discuss the psychological and physical consequences of the current economic crisis, providing case examples and studies and offering coping strategies.
