Alumni Service Award

Presented during Medical Alumni Weekend, the Alumni Service Award honors the recipients’ generous, loyal and energetic commitment to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and to the Medical Center Development and Alumni Relations programs. Honorees are selected annually by the Office of Alumni Development and Alumni Relations.

Darryl L. Landis2008 - Darryl L. Landis, M'89

Darryl L. Landis has nearly 20 years of health-care experience in both clinical and management roles. As president of Mustard Seed Ventures, Inc., Dr. Landis provides consulting expertise in health management strategy to Fortune 500 companies. He also serves in executive leadership roles with several early-stage companies, including Ideal Image, a chain of laser hair removal clinics, and ZyCare, a provider of software solutions to physicians for the remote management of patients.

Dr. Landis graduated magna cum laude from Millersville University in 1985. After graduating from the School of Medicine in 1989, he completed his residency in family practice at Lancaster General Hospital (1989-1992). In 2001, he received an M.B.A. from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, where he was a Fuqua Scholar. He also received the AMA/Burroughs Wellcome Leadership Award and the Parke-Davis Teacher Development Award.

Dr. Landis is formerly senior vice president of health intelligence and chief medical officer of CorSolutions, Inc., a private disease management company based in Chicago, which was recently acquired by Matria, Inc. Prior to joining CorSolutions, he held several key executive roles with UnitedHealthcare of North Carolina and Ingenix, both divisions of UnitedHealth Group.

Dr. Landis is the founder and former president of Preston Health Partners; a member of the board of trustees of the West Virginia Medical Institute; and the founder and chairman of Nazareth Project, Inc., a national charitable organization that raises funds for health-care services in the Middle East. He has been a member of the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) since 1993, and serves on its board of directors. He is also Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Public Health Sciences, at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Dr. Landis is a strong advocate for the School of Medicine and is very active in alumni activities. In 2006, he donated stethoscopes to the entire medical class of 2010. That same year, he joined the PENN Medicine Campaign Cabinet. In 2007, he joined the Medical Alumni Advisory Council. Previously, he served as a member of the Medical Alumni Leadership Council.

Dr. Landis sees his involvement in alumni associations as “a way to ensure that the School maintains its level of excellence” by networking with alumni and encouraging their financial support.

Rhoda Rosen2008 - Rhoda Rosen, CW'54, M'58

Dr. Rhoda Rosen is a retired obstetrician and gynecologist. An early pioneer of medical education for women, she was the first female resident in obstetrics and gynecology at Albert Einstein College (1959-1962), as well as the first female surgeon on staff.

Dr. Rosen began her private practice in 1962, while also attending at Albert Einstein College and Rolling Hill Hospital and working as a clinical associate professor at Temple University Medical School. Today, she is a member of a number of medical societies, including the Philadelphia Obstetrics Society, the American College of Obstetricians (where she is a lifetime member), and the College of Surgeons. She serves on the board of the Joseph J. Peters Institute and the Philadelphia Bar Association Fee Disputes Committee.

Dr. Rosen was the first woman president of the Ex-Residents Society at Albert Einstein, a past president of the Philadelphia Colposcopy Society, and chair of Gynecological Pathology Review Committee. She is also a past member of the American Medical Association, the College of Physicians and the Philadelphia County Medical Society.

Devoted to her medical alma mater, Dr. Rosen serves as the chair of the Medical Class of 1958 and has been a longtime class agent. For many years, she has mentored women medical students through the Women in Medicine program. Dr. Rosen takes her role as class agent quite seriously and is exceptional at staying in touch with her classmates and garnering support for the School of Medicine. She considers her classmates part of her extended family. A lifelong learner, Dr. Rosen still takes classes at Penn and is an enthusiastic presence on campus.

Dr. Rosen has been married to Seymour Kanter for over 50 years. They have four children (one of whom graduated from PENN Medicine in 1989) and nine grandchildren.  In her spare time, Dr. Rosen enjoys swimming, bicycling, needlepoint and attending the opera.
