Catch up with classmates, learn about how PENN Medicine has changed — and remained the same — and bring your family. We have events planned for everyone!

9 – 10 a.m.

“New Frontiers in Robotic Surgery.”
Penn surgeons have been and continue to be at the forefront of new advances in robotic surgery. This session features, among others, a urologist who has accumulated one of the world’s largest series of robotic prostatectomies and one of the surgeons responsible for the development of an entirely new field, transoral robotic surgery.

“The Promise of BioMedical Infomatics: Spanning the Spectrum of Basic and Clinical Research.”
Have you ever had trouble accessing your medical records, or those of your patients?  Join Glen N. Gaulton, Ph.D., the School of Medicine’s Chief Scientific Officer, in a talk that explores the future of BioMedical Informatics, an emerging field in which the tools of computer science are bringing health system databases to life.  BioMedical Informatics promises tremendous gains for doctors who need up-to-date patient data in order to make well-informed decisions, and also for biomedical researchers who can harness this computing power to accelerate investigative work in genetics, drug responsiveness, and other areas.  But with these exciting gains come new perils for patient privacy and new challenges as a growing field looks to make the most of its potential.

“The Future of Cardiovascular Medicine.”
Penn has developed world-class clinical programs and cardiac care and treatment with the use of new technology. Come hear Dr. Mike Parmacek as he discusses revolutionary discoveries that will fight Cardiovascular disease and improve heart health in the future.

10:15 – 11:45 a.m.

“Back from the Dead: Resuscitative Medicine.”
Dr. Lance Becker, Director of Penn’s new Center for Resuscitation Science will talk about bringing patients back from the brink of death, but more important, the translational research that will ensure they leave the hospital able to lead full, healthy lives. Dr. Becker will discuss cooling the heart and brain as protective therapy, the new cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and using artificial circulation devices in conjunction with therapeutic agents to prevent and repair damage at the cellular level.

All Alumni Luncheon featuring keynote presentation, “Primun Non Nocere: Patient Safety as a Precursor for Care in Hospitals.”
Dr. Richard Shannon will discuss the impact of medical errors on health-care costs and outcomes. He will demonstrate how the application of principals borrowed from highly reliable industries can be applied to care delivery in hospitals toward the elimination of unsafe conditions and the provision of flawless health care. Dr. Shannon will draw upon his work with former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and use examples of these principles applied at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

“Advances in Women’s Health”
Women are busier then ever. While trying to keep up with the joys and stresses of life, attention to health is especially important. Penn has been a leader in the care of women and families for more than two centuries. Learn how Dr. Debbie Driscoll, professor and chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is leading the way to provide outstanding patient-centered care and to improve the health of women through basic and translational programs in women’s and reproduction health.

"Building Blocks of a Tax-Wise Estate Plan"
Hear an overview of common issues arising in the estate planning process, along with an explanation of recently reformed Federal Estate Tax and basic techniques for minimizing its impact.

The evening will also provide special recognition for those receiving the Distinguished Graduate Award and the Alumni Service Award.

“When the Press Gets Medicine Wrong”
There was a time when medical stories were never a part of the evening news. Today there are leading medical reports covered every night. In the quest to bring these medical reports to the nation, is the press doing it accurately, and if not, how wrong are the reports and what are the implications? Dr. Snyderman will discuss her career as a medical broadcast reporter at ABC and now at NBC and discuss how she tries to safeguard the medical information that she reports to millions of people every night as a correspondent.

“From Penn to the Nobel Prize”
Dr. Stanley Prusiner won the Nobel Prize for Physiology/Medicine for his discovery of prions, an entirely new disease agent which is responsible for several rare human and animal brain diseases (mad cow). Dr. Prusiner will be speaking on his experiences at PENN as a student and how they lead him on the path to the Noble prize.

“Monkey business: What, if anything, is unethical about cloning monkeys or human embryos?”
It has taken 10 years but the prospect of human cloning has now inched very close to becoming a reality with the news of successful cloning of 20 macaque monkey embryos. Dr. Art Caplan, Director of the Center for Bioethics, will lead an exciting panel discussion on the ethics of cloning, including for stem cell research as well as reproduction.
