Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Mackler is a clinician/scientist in the area of addiction. He couples clinical practice in the area of general medical care to those with substance abuse problems with basic science research. Dr. Mackler has appointments in the Departments of Pharmacology and Psychiatry as well as the Institute for Neuroscience. Addiction to many classes of drugs is associated with alterations in the expression of multiple mRNAs in the mammalian CNS. His research is focused on identifying which mRNAs have their levels regulated by cocaine in order to better define the molecular basis of the self-administration of addictive drugs. Dr. Mackler has taught medical students, residents, post doctoral fellows, nurses and other Penn faculty in many different departments in the area of substance abuse. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
