Description of Research Expertise

Research Interests
Animal viruses, viral pathogenesis, innate immunity.

Key words: hepatitis virus, interferon.

Description of Research
Our laboratory focuses on the replication and pathogenesis of hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV, HCV). Both viruses cause chronic infections that can lead to the development of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. We are investigating host-virus interactions that are important for the replication and maintenance of HBV and HCV genomes in infected hepatocytes. We are particularly interested in the cellular antiviral programs that impinge on the life cycles of these viruses. For our studies we are applying established molecular approaches in combination with genomics and bioinformatics. In addition, we are beginning investigations of the HCV-related West Nile and Dengue viruses, which will allow us to exploit information forthcoming from the mouse genome project for studies on host-virus interactions and pathogenesis in an established animal model.

Rotation Projects for 2006-2007
The subjects of rotation projects are the innate immune response against hepatitis C and West Nile viruses.
