Clinical research is focused primarily on stroke in childhood, including arterial ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, cerebral venous thrombosis, and related cerebral vascular disorders. Current active research activities include vascular effects of infection in pediatric stroke (VIPS-II); language and visual-spatial function in children after perinatal stroke; safety/effectiveness of constraint-induced therapy for infants following perinatal stroke.
Related research activities through collaborations locally at CHOP/Penn and nationally include: hypothermia for pediatric cardiac arrest, cerebrovascular complications of device-support for cardiac failure, novel neuromonitoring strategies in pediatric intensive care.
Childhood Stroke & acute brain injury due to cardiac arrest and traumatic brain injury. Primary clinical focus is stroke. As director of the CHOP Stroke Program, I oversee operation of clinical stroke care programs through a 24/7 rapid response neurovascular consultation service and multidisciplinary out-patient stroke follow-up clinic. Team members include vascular neurologists (Evelyn Shih, Lauren Beslow), neonatal neurologist (Sonika Agarwal), pediatric physiatrist (Elana Katz), rehab therapists with expertise in occupational therapy (Todd Levy), physical therapy (Heather Atkinson), speech/language pathology (Amy Colin), neuropsycholgy (Lauren Krivitzky), social work (Heather Deline), nursing (Cathy Horiates) and special education (Elisa Olson). Training elements include bedside & didactic teaching activities for physician and nursing staff within CHOP, and community outreach via a CME program for primary ED & pediatric practitioners. A pediatric stroke fellowship was established in July 2008.
