I continue to be fascinated by all subspecialties of neurology. For this reason, I enjoy seeing general neurology patients, especially disorders of the spinal cord. Following my residency training, I completed a neuromuscular fellowship here at the University of Pennsylvania and obtained certification from the Amerian Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in neuromuscular medicine. Thus, I have additional expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the peripheral nervous system, such as radiculopathy, mononeuropathies, polyneuropathy, myopathy, motor neuron disease and disorders of neuromuscular junction transmission. I have published articles on polyneuropathy following gastric bypass surgery, neuromyotonia, POEMS syndrome, and reviews on the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral neuropathy. I am currently a member of the AAN Guideline Committee on the treatment of painful diabetic distal symmetric polyneuropathy. In 2014 and 2015, I was a member of the winning Neurobowl team at the American Academy of Neurology national meeting, which is a competition assessing the ability of the participants to rapidly and accurately diagnose uncommon neurologic diseases. In 2016, I was selected by my peers to the University of Pennsylvania Academy of Master Clinicians. In 2016, I was also the President of the Philadelphia Neurological Society, which is the oldest continuously running organization of its kind. In 2018, I was one of 2 faculty to be named Clinical Practice of the University of Pennsylvania Provider of the Year. In 2020, I am the co-division chief for the neurohospitalist division here at the University of Pennsylvania.
I have been involved in neurology residency education at the University of Pennsylvania since 2008. In 2012, I transitioned from the associate neurology residency director to the neurology residency director. I am particularly interested in resident wellness, improving the efficiency of education delivery during residency and formal training in non-clinical domains, such as career development. Since 2008, I have had the pleasure to participate in the mentorship and training of more than 150 neurology residents. The vast majority of these residents are now in faculty positions at academic medical institutions and universities. During their training, I teach residents in a variety of clinical settings, weekly in their outpatient continuity clinic and on the wards at least 10 weeks per year. I give more than 20 different didactic lectures to the residents each year in addition to monthly bedside teaching rounds, morning report, and neuroradiology and neuropathology case conferences. In 2010 and 2016, I was honored to receive the University of Pennsylvania Neurology Residents teaching award. In 2018, I received the American Academy of Neurology Training Director recognition award. I also give more than 15 yearly neurology lectures to the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of medicine students. In 2015 and 2016, I was honored to receive the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine Most Outstanding Neurology lecture. At a national level, I have participated in yearly courses at both the AAN and ANA. I have been a member of the American Academy of Neurology Residency-In-Training Examination Committee since 2013 and am currently the vice-chair of this committee. I am a member of the AAN Fellowship timeline task force, which is facilitating discussions to standardize the fellowship application process across all subspecialties. I co-host AAN trainee trivia, which shows interesting neurologic cases virtually on a monthly basis. From a medical education research perspective, I have published interesting cases in the Neurology Resident and Fellow's section, Continuum, as well as the New England Journal of Medicine as well as original research on electronic medical records, reducing missed appointments in residents' clinics, and mentored peer review. I am the co-author of a textbook of algorithms in neurology, Clinical Decision Making in Neurology. I also frequently participate and lead discussions in the monthly University of Pennsylvania interdisciplinary medical education journal club. Finally, I am active in providing continuing medical education to the community as the Director of the University of Pennsylvania Neurology Board Review course and speaker in the University of Pennsylvania Neurology for the non-neurologist course.
