Description of Clinical Expertise

Dr. Kotloff is the Craig and Elaine Dobbin/Nancy P. Blumenthal Professor of Medicine. He was a founding member of the Penn Lung Transplant Program and has worked in the field of lung transplantation for over 30 years. In addition to his extensive experience in lung transplantation, Dr. Kotloff has special expertise in the evaluation and management of patients with interstitial lung disease, lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), and other cystic lung diseases. He also maintains an active interest in general pulmonary medicine and, in particular, in evaluating patients with complex pulmonary disorders.

Description of Other Expertise

In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Kotloff has made medical education and scholarship a focus of his career. He has authored over 130 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, editorials, and book chapters. He has edited or co-edited seven books and monographs, most notably serving as co-editor on the 5th and 6th editions of Fishman's Pulmonary Diseases and Disorders. He previously directed the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Training Program at the University of Pennsylvania for 24 years. He has served as Chair of the Pulmonary Disease Test Writing Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Chair of the Transplant Network of the American College of Chest Physicians, and as President of the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors. Previous editorial board positions include Associate Editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Section Editor for CHEST, Associate Editor of the Annals of the American Thoracic Society (AnnalsATS) and Senior Deputy Editor for AnnalsATS. He is currently a Section Editor for UptoDate. Dr. Kotloff is the 2011 recipient of the American College of Chest Physicians College Medalist Award recognizing meritorious service in furthering work in chest medicine. He is also the 2016 recipient of the American Thoracic Society Outstanding Educator Award, which recognizes lifetime contributions in education and mentoring in the fields of pulmonary, critical care or sleep medicine.

Dr. Kotloff has held a number of major administrative roles in his career. He served for many years at Chief of the Section of Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplantation at Penn. From 2014-19, he was Chair of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Cleveland Clinic. After returning to Penn in 2019, he served as Director of the Harron Lung Center for three years.
