Description of Clinical Expertise

IMRT and 3D CRT treatment planning for various sites including the head and neck, prostate, lungs, gastric bed, breast and spine. Brachytherapy with LDR and HDR therapies to prostate, ovarian, gynecological, lung, breast and gastrointestinal sites, brachytherapy QA. Radiation safety experience in patient briefings, surveys, and shielding design. Monthly and annual QA on Varian therapy machines. Beam data acquisition and treatment planning system commissioning for the treatment of small fields in stereotactic radiation therapy. 4D CT image acquisition and evaluation. Proton commissioning and QA.

Description of Other Expertise

Platforms: Unix, Linux, Windows.
Primary programming languages: C, C++, VTK, ITK, MATLAB
Other languages and databases: Visual C++, Standard ML, Haskell, SQL Windows, and several other application packages.

Description of Research Expertise

Medical image analysis, medical imaging physics, image registration, 2D-3D image registration, image segmentation, statistical estimation theory, and optimization techniques. Expertise in finite element analysis, feature extraction, signal processing, information theory, stochastic processes, decision theory and Bayesian inference, numerical methods and computer vision. Other interests include pattern classification and deformable registration with applications to image guided therapy and surgery, computer aided diagnosis and visualization. Spatial and morphological modelling of complex radiation dose distributions.

I am interested in the development of new image analysis and computational techniques to allow more accurate treatment and a better understanding of cancer. My research is focused in three areas: 1) the development of image registration algorithms for IGRT for prostate cancer and for brain tumors, 2) the study of toxicity after radiation therapy and the development of new normal tissue complication probability models that take into account the spatial and morphological characteristics of the radiation dose distributions as well as dose volume characteristics, 3) the study of brain gliomas using quantitative imaging markers to better understand how gliomas progress with time.
