Description of Research Expertise

My research program is focused on the biology of pre-cancerous lesions of the pancreas and the early molecular and cellular events that occur during the transition to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The overarching goal of these studies is to learn more about how PDAC evolves so that we may devise new strategies for early diagnosis.

Three themes underscore our work: 1) Dissecting the interactions between the pancreatic epithelium and the inflammatory stromal compartment during pancreatitis, precancer (PanIN), and cancer development; 2) Understanding the molecular and cellular requirements, kinetics and geography of blood-borne dissemination and metastasis of pancreas cells; and 3) Analyzing the genetic and genomic changes that drive the development and progression of precancerous lesions of the pancreas.

Our studies employ genetically engineered mouse models of PanIN and PDAC development. We are also engaged in translational studies of our work from the mouse model with human specimens. Clinical studies have been initiated to study potential biomarkers of and therapeutics for pancreatic cancer.
