ABOUT:
Paul N. Lanken, M.D. is the Director of Medical Education at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the Medical Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lanken's clinical interests are critical care medicine and pulmonary diseases. His clinical research interests currently include randomized clinical trials involving ICU patients with sepsis or adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). He is currently the principal investigator of an NIH funded clinical network for the study of Prevention and Treatment of ARDS. Not only is he interested in applying techniques of clinical epidemiology to his clinical and bioethics research, but he is also currently enrolled in the Masters Science program in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

He is particularly interested in areas of bioethics relevant to intensive care situations, such as withholding and withdrawing life support, informed consent of critically ill patients and the allocation of scarce and expensive resources.

Dr. Lanken also serves as the center's "point person" for the development of a new curriculum in Bioethics and Professional Responsibility for the School of Medicine. He previously served as Chairman of the School's Task Force that developed a curriculum of bioethics and professional responsibility. He is currently working with the Medical School Dean's Office, course directors and other members of the Center for Bioethics to integrate bioethics into appropriate course work as well as to develop a free standing 1 week bioethics course for third year medical students after their first year of clinical rotations.
