Description of Research Expertise

Research Interests

Dr. Shaked is a nationally recognized leader in the field of transplantation. For many years, Dr. Shaked's practice has focused on the surgical treatment of liver and hepatobiliary diseases. He is one of the most experienced surgeons in the country in adult and pediatric liver transplantation, and has a special interest in hepatobiliary malignancy, as well as biliary reconstruction.

Dr. Shaked's academic record is reflected by his achievements in basic laboratory research and support for clinical science investigation. His laboratory efforts focus on the application of gene transfer technology in the transplant setting.

Description of Itmat Expertise

The Shaked laboratory studies examine pathways of alloimmune, antigen-specific, and inflammatory response in the setting of human solid organ transplantation. Genomics, proteomics, and cell based assays are being correlated with clinical outcomes. These include: 1) The interrelation between inflammatory pathways and activation of alloimmune response in the immediate post-transplant setting; 2) Pattern of anti-HCV response and recurrent hepatitis C under immunosuppression; and 3) Markers of rejection and tolerance in urine and peripheral blood in recipients undergoing kidney and liver transplantation.
