Dr. Long’s research focuses on social determinants of health and health care especially as they pertain to socioeconomic and racial disparities. Dr. Long assesses these issues in the context of chronic disease, especially diabetes, using established measures to gauge disease specific medical outcomes. Current research has focused on interventions to reduce disparities in health. She recently completed a VA based randomized controlled trial (RCT) of peer mentoring and financial incentives for adults with poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes and is currently the PI for a similar NIDDK-funded clinical RCT which is being implemented in a non VA low-income minority population. Also through a VA Patient Aligned Care Team Demo Lab she recently started a new RCT evaluating if former mentees can be trained to be effective mentors for diabetic veterans.
Dr Long is boarded in and practices general internal medicine.
