The Department of Radiation Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for a Research Associate position in the Academic Support Staff. This appointment will be initially for one (1) year and continuation during that time period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding (limited to three (3) years). Responsibilities include conduct research designed to study the effects of low and high dose and dose-rate ionizing radiations (including solar particle event radiation) on changes in the hematopoietic and immune systems, skin and vision alterations, cardiovascular system and the blood coagulation cascade, using animal model systems and cultured cells. The successful candidate must have research experience in radiation biology, protein biochemistry, enzymology and assay development and working with animal model systems and cultured cell systems. Must have ability to function as part of a team and provide mentoring and guidance to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, technicians and visiting scientists and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Candidate will be expected to design experiments and assist in the preparation of research grants, progress reports, meeting abstracts and peer-reviewed publications. Cellular and biochemical assays will be performed as well as extensive animal handling. Animal protocol writing experience is required. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as strong planning, organization, and independent decision-making capabilities. Authorship of manuscripts and conference presentation of study results are expected. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and have demonstrated excellent qualifications in research.
