The Department of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for a Research Associate position in the Academic Support Staff. This appointment will be initially for one (1) year and continuation during that time period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding (limited to three (3) years). The successful applicant will have experience in the field of basic and translational research on muscular dystrophy and cardiomyopathy. Responsibilities include care of large lab animals, including translational models for muscular dystrophy and heart failure; the provision of monitored anesthesia for these large animals; work and training equivalent to the level of human clinical trials; planning, organizing and executing research projects related to the main scope and focus of the lab; organizing different resources to be utilized in the course of study, including writing the SOPs and getting approval from different regulatory authorities (e.g. IACUC) as required; ordering various reagents and other resources for the lab; executing the research project by utilizing various skills in molecular and cellular biology, immunology, specialized tissue preparation, histological analysis and other research methodologies for data generation, collection and analysis; facilitating the various day-to-day activities in the lab; supervising student workers and rotation students; writing and disseminating research results by preparing manuscripts for publication and presenting the research findings at scientific conferences; and contributing meaningful ideas and working productively with other research team members in other ongoing projects in the lab. Applicants must have an MD, DVM, PhD or equivalent degree in addition to significant post doctoral work experience and a track record of first-authored publications. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

The successful candidate will become a member of the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. Duties will be pursued within the laboratory of Dr. Hansell Stedman. The effective date of appointment will be 10/08/2012.
