The Philadelphia VA Medical Center (PVAMC) and the Department of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seek candidates for an Assistant Professor position in the non-tenure clinician-educator track. The successful applicant will have experience in the field of surgical critical care. Responsibilities include patient care and teaching (delineated below) as well as clinical and/or basic science research in topics related to surgical critical care. Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree. They must also be certified by the American Board of Surgery or eligible for such certification and must have, or be eligible for, an ABS certificate of added qualifications in surgical critical care.
The successful applicant will be assigned to the SICU and will work with the critical care management team to provide patients with high quality, continuous and consistent care. This position coordinates the clinical care of surgical patients and collaborates with the medical service on the care of these patients. The SICU physician will participate in the training of surgical residents, fellows, medical students, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other health care providers. He/she will provide consultative services during the daily Surgical Service rounds. He/she will additionally serve as the SICU director, and in this role will write policies and procedures governing patients care, best practice guidelines and review bed utilization on the unit. He/she will be responsible for administering bed allocation, supervising quality assurance activities (chairing committees to improve quality and attending staff meeting to review), ensuring JCAHO and other regulatory agency mandates are being met, and ensuring that all relevant documentation related to the lCU is reported appropriately. The incumbent will also serve as the preceptor for a team of physician assistants who cover the surgical service inpatient wards on weeknights, weekends and holidays. He/she will also participate on the call schedule for surgical complexity, which requires the consultant to respond to consultation requests via telephone within 15 minutes and in-house within 60 minutes, as requested by the Surgical Team.
This position will be full-time and based at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center of Philadelphia, with secondary duties at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. It offers excellent benefits, liberal vacation time and sick and educational leave. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience; personal malpractice insurance coverage is not required.
A current unrestricted M.D. license to practice medicine in a state, territory or commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia is required. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and proficient in spoken and written English, and they must meet physical requirements as well as completing a security background investigation.
