At Penn Medicine, we are committed to excellence in all that we do–caring for patients, advancing
scientific knowledge, and training the next generation of physicians and scientists. Many beneficial advances
in each of these areas are the result of productive and appropriate collaborative relationships between
physicians, scientists and outside groups, including industry. For that reason, Penn physicians and scientists,
like all University faculty, are permitted to engage in outside activities, provided that these activities do
not infringe upon the integrity of the work they do at Penn. Penn Medicine policies require outside
relationships to be limited, regularly reported, and carefully scrutinized to avoid conflicts of interest.
Importantly, individuals working at Penn who are leading clinical trials or other research involving patients
are subject to additional stringent review and reporting requirements on outside activities in order for such
research to be undertaken.
We believe that we have an obligation to the public to be transparent regarding relationships with outside
entities. To this end, we have developed this website that provides information about an individual, full time
Penn Medicine physician or scientist's involvement with private organizations and companies for which he or she
received compensation. This is the first year that we are providing this kind of information to the public and
as such, the data may not be perfect. We intend to post this information annually and expect that with
experience and feedback , our web site will continually improve.
About These Initial Listings
The information contained here about a Penn Medicine physician or scientist reflects activity during
Calendar Year 2008 only and is based solely on submissions by these individuals.
The compensation disclosed is cash compensation, not reimbursement for expenses such as meals or
travel, and does not include a valuation of equity or royalties received by physicians and scientists for
intellectual property which they have developed. (We expect to be able to provide equity and royalty
information in the future.)
This site does not include gifts or grants made to Penn Medicine
Pediatric physicians or scientists employed by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and private
practice physicians with admitting privileges at a Penn Medicine hospital are not included on this web
site.
The data presented here may differ somewhat from information in other publicly available databases. Some
discrepancies may arise from different reporting periods or different definitions. While independent
organizations, such as the Institute of Medicine and others, have called for a uniform method of reporting
industry collaboration, there is not yet a standard approach.
The public is encouraged to speak directly with individual faculty members if they have questions regarding
any financial relationships contained on this site. Inquiries about this website should be directed to the
Office of Public Affairs: fac_ead@mail.med.upenn.edu.
