Young scientists in nearly every field are finding today's job market a confusing place. More new PhDs, post-docs and Master's degree holders are considering a wider range of careers in and out of science, but feel ill-prepared and uninformed about their options. Peter Fiske, PhD will present a thorough and practical overview to the process of career planning and job hunting in today's job market, from the perspective of a young scientist.
Dr. Fiske will cover specific steps that young scientists can take to broaden their horizons, strengthen their skills and present their best face to potential employers, including:
· a range of valuable "transferable skills" that are highly sought after by employers in and out of science
· the specifics of job hunting: informational interviewing, building your network, developing a compelling CV and resume, cover letters and interviewing
· the breadth of career opportunities for Ph.D.s
Peter Fiske, PhD. is CEO of PAX Mixer, Inc. and the author of Put Your Science to Work: The Take Charge Career Guide for Scientists. Fiske received his Ph.D. in Geological and Environmental Sciences in 1994 from Stanford University & an MBA from U.C. Berkeley in 2002. In 1996 Fiske was awarded a White House Fellowship & served one year in the Clinton Administration as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Special Projects. He is the author of 22 technical articles, and a former member of the technical staff of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He has presented versions of this workshop to over 13,000 scientists and engineers in universities (Harvard, MIT, Berkeley, Stanford, UNC- Chapel Hill, University of Michigan, Scripps, U.C.L.A., Cambridge and others), government laboratories, and at national and international scientific meetings.
This event is open to Penn science, biomedical and engineering PhD students, postdocs eligible through Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs, SEAS postdocs, and SAS postdocs.
