This 1.5 day symposium was designed for mental health practitioners and will provide a thorough review of the current state of understanding, assessing for, and treating adult ADHD. The contemporary conceptualization of ADHD as a disorder of executive functions as well as other etiologic models will be reviewed as will their implications for recognizing the symptoms and impairments associated with ADHD. The components of a “gold standard” assessment strategy for making the diagnosis of ADHD will be outlined. Finally, current evidence-based treatment strategies, emphasizing pharmacotherapy and psychosocial treatment, namely cognitive behavioral therapy adapted for adult ADHD will be reviewed. Additional promising treatments that have preliminary research support will also be introduced and various controversial treatments and other debates about the assessment and treatment of adult ADHD will be discussed.
