Democracy, Governance and Curbing Corruption in Sub-Saharan Africa
Location: Cheyney University of Pennsylvania
An international conference organized by the Master of Public Administration Program, in collaboration with The African & Caribbean Business Council.
While other regions of the world are making strides in improving the living standards of their citizens, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is still trapped in poverty with more than 40% of its 600 million people living below the internationally recognised absolute poverty level of US$ 1 per day. Several reports highlight corruption as one of the institutional and systemic problems responsible for keeping million of Africans under absolute poverty. In fact, the 2008 Transparency International report demonstrates a direct link between corruption and failure of societal institutions to effectively achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in SSA. It is a serious concern that the goals of halving poverty in SSA by the year 2015 from the level of 1990 will not be met.
For additional information including call for papers, registration and lodging, please visit the conference website at: http://www.cheyney.edu/international-anticorruption/index.cfm

Approximately 1.4 billion people in the world are infected with one or more of the seven most common neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). NTDs have severe public health consequences, including: malnutrition, anemia, serious and permanent disability and disfigurement, illness, and even death. Not only do NTDs disproportionately affect poor and vulnerable populations, the public health consequences of these diseases threaten broader economic and social improvement in affected nations.
The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have recognized the threat from NTDs and have begun to unite to work to eliminate a number of these diseases from their region. The LAC countries, supported by multilateral organizations, are working to achieve the elimination of NTDs as a public health threat by 2015 through proven, cost-effective interventions.
Please join us for a public discussion that will highlight the progress and prospects for NTD elimination in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The deadline to nominate your staff member for the LeadingSuccessTM Program is fast approaching! Nominations must be received by Friday May 3, 2013. Please see below for more details.
Would someone you supervise benefit from a significant investment in their development?
Would you benefit from a significant investment in your own development?
Nominations are currently being accepted through May 3rd for LeadingSuccess™, a first-level program for leadership skills development sponsored by the Perelman SOM's Office of Organization Effectiveness. The program is open to both Perelman SOM faculty and staff.
We are seeking participants that have proven themselves as outstanding performers and have strong potential for future roles. To qualify, nominees must currently supervise others or be in a full-time project manager role that involves others (e.g., running a project team).
Nominations must have the endorsement of their current supervisor, who must be committed to supporting the nominee’s attendance at the schedule of program activities over a period of nine months. The Program will include participant assessment, classroom sessions and coaching.
The content of LeadingSuccess™ differs from the Supervisory Certificate Series (SCS) in that it dives more deeply into skill development than the SCS. There is not significant overlap between the two programs. The SCS is not a prerequisite for LeadingSuccess™, and graduates of the SCS are eligible.
For more detailed information about the LeadingSuccess program, go to: http://www.med.upenn.edu/oe/leading-success.shtml.
To nominate your staff member for the program (or to request your supervisor to nominate you for the program), download the nomination form at: http://www.med.upenn.edu/oe/user_documents/LeadingSuccess_Nomination_Form-2.doc
