Democracy, Governance and Curbing Corruption in Sub-Saharan Africa
Location: Cheyney University of Pennsylvania
An international conference organized by the Master of Public Administration Program, in collaboration with The African & Caribbean Business Council.
While other regions of the world are making strides in improving the living standards of their citizens, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is still trapped in poverty with more than 40% of its 600 million people living below the internationally recognised absolute poverty level of US$ 1 per day. Several reports highlight corruption as one of the institutional and systemic problems responsible for keeping million of Africans under absolute poverty. In fact, the 2008 Transparency International report demonstrates a direct link between corruption and failure of societal institutions to effectively achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in SSA. It is a serious concern that the goals of halving poverty in SSA by the year 2015 from the level of 1990 will not be met.

Violence is often deeply rooted in cultural, economic and social practices and inhibits the potential for children to contribute to society. This conference will seek to explore:
Through expert faculty presentations, a keynote address and interactive panel discussions, this conference will provide conference attendees opportunities to understand the global reality and response to violence against children. Our Annual Meeting brings together over 2,000 scholars and participants from around the world to present and discuss cutting-edge research on Africa. This year’s theme for the Annual Meeting is “Mobility, Migration, and Flows.” The conference will offer over 200 panels and roundtables on various topics that fall under this theme. There are several panels and roundtables that I believe you, the faculty, and the students of the Perelman School of Medicine would be interested in, including: “Chasing Polio in Northern Nigeria and the Problems of Containing Trans-border Flows of Polio Viruses”; “Medicine on the Move: Interrogating the Direction and Meaning of Mobility in Global Health Discourse on Africa”; “Perspectives on Disability in Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo”; “Health and Medicine Workshop: Grant Writing”; “Health and Medicine Workshop: New Research Directions”; and the ASA Board Sponsored Current Issues Event, “Genomic Research Flows and Health in Africa”.
You can view the preliminary program in full on the African Studies Association’s website. Our website also contains other information for the Annual Meeting, including registration information. We offer on-site day passes in addition to full conference passes, and we also offer lower registration rates for students.
