PhD Applicants

Thank you for your interest in pursuing doctoral studies in Biomedical Graduate Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.

Biomedical Graduate Studies' seven graduate groups offer the graduate student an integrated training experience in modern biomedical science. In the first year, students take courses in fundamental areas of biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology offered by faculty in all the appropriate graduate groups. The second year is devoted to more focused laboratory work and courses related to a student's particular interests. Beginning in year three, students conduct dissertation research in the laboratory of their choosing; this research typically takes two or three years.

Applicants may apply to one of six graduate groups in BGS* via our online application. The deadline for Fall 2009 enrollment is December 8, 2008. The application will be available by October 1, 2008.

Individuals may apply to only one group within Biomedical Graduate Studies. However, they may ask that their application be transferred from one group to another at any point in the admissions season.

Please refer to our FAQ page and the Instructions section of the online application, as they contain the answers to the most common application questions.
