BGS offers awards for BGS students to attend meetings and courses.* BGS will contribute up to $500.00 for a student to attend a meeting to present a poster or give an oral presentation per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). In addition, BGS will contribute up to $1500 to help defray the costs of attending a course (i.e. courses offered through Marine Biological Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, or similar organizations) to further a student's research/education per lifetime.**
| Amount | Frequency |
| $500 maximum | per annum (July 1 – June 30) |
| $1500 maximum | per BGS lifetime to attend a course |
Students may only receive one travel award/year (i.e. BGS will support attendance at a course or a meeting, but not both, in any given fiscal year). A student's eligibility is based on the dates of the trip, not when the student requests funding.
When requesting travel funds, please complete the BGS Travel Fund Request Form and bring it to 417 Anatomy- Chemistry Building . Requests for funding to attend a meeting/conference must be formally submitted 3 weeks before the date of departure. REQUESTS SUBMITTED AFTER DEPARTURE DATE WILL NOT BE REVIEWED. Requests for funding to attend a course must be formally submitted 1 month before the date of departure. Requests received after these time frames may or may not be approved depending on fund availability. Students and their advisors should write a letter together explaining the need to attend the meeting/course: this letter must accompany the BGS Travel Fund Request Form along with an abstract of the work to be presented at the conference or topic to be covered at the course.
Contact Peggy Buckley at buckley@mail.med.upenn.edu if you have any questions.
* In general, only students who are presenting would receive travel funds from BGS. If a student can make a strong academic case by formally submitting a letter from their advisor or GG chair explaining why s/he needs to attend, then consideration may be given on a case-by-case basis.
** Exceptions to the dollar amount and lifetime status of support to attend courses at institutions other than Penn are at the discretion of the BGS Director and Graduate Group Chair.
