Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization by Time-Of-Flight
(MALDI-TOF)

This is a soft ionization mass spectrometry approach that allows for the analysis of a variety of biological macromolecules and large organic molecules. Sample that is mixed with a matrix is irradiated with a pulsed laser, creating analyte molecules that are ionized and accelerated to yield mass information.

  • The Bruker Microflex LHF MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometer is a bench-top instrument designed for for a variety of routine applications in the analysis of proteins and small molecules. (Dept/SOM).

Prices for the Penn Community* (FY 2017):

Initial training: $100/experiment – mandatory for first three uses
Instrument use: $25/hour
