BUP Research Associate

The Botswana-UPenn Partnership is a collaboration between the Botswana Government, University of Botswana, and University of Pennsylvania. We aim to improve clinical care of HIV infected and affected persons, advance research and enrich academic life.

We are seeking an innovative and motivated PhD scientist to join the Botswana-UPenn Partnership to lead our new, well-equipped molecular biology, human genomics laboratory in space shared with trainees and faculty from the University of Botswana. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the management and supervision of our Center for AIDS Research Core Laboratory in Botswana, which currently includes two lab technicians. The candidate will be expected to spend approximately 25% of his/her time working with our country research partners who are using or seek to use our lab and 75% on their own research projects. The collaborative projects will include individuals from the University of Botswana School of Medicine (UB), the Ministry of Health (MOH), and investigators from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) who have funded projects in Botswana.

Key Performance Areas Include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Establishing collaborations with UB faculty
  • Initiating own research project(s)
  • Supervising technicians involved in projects lead by other investigators from UB, the MOH, and Penn
  • Publishing research in reputable journals
  • Training others on proper use of the equipment in the UB-BUP lab

Position Requirements:

  • PhD in Biology / Biochemistry / Molecular Biology / Microbiology / Immunology/ Genomics or other related fields
  • Expertise in HIV, opportunistic pathogens, and/or TB preferred.
  • Technical skills in molecular biology and cell-based assays
  • Completed at least 2 years of postdoctoral training
  • Proven publication record in biological experimental design and execution
  • Ability to mentor Masters, PhD students and faculty in genomics research
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills with ability to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary, multi-institution, multi-cultural team.

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Experience with genomics techniques (e.g. whole exome sequencing, RNA sequencing, eQTL analysis.
  • At least six months experience working in a multicultural environment in a resource limited setting; experience in Sub-Saharan Africa or Botswana an asset.

BUP Faculty Openings in Botswana

The BUP invites dynamic, self-motivated, and qualified individuals to apply to work in our HIV and TB programs in Botswana to provide training and technical support to healthcare workers regarding the management of complicated HIV+ and TB patients.

Position Requirements:

Medical degree

Post graduate training with board eligibility or board certification in Infectious Diseases (2 positions) or Pulmonary
Medicine (1 position)

At least six months cumulative experience working in a multicultural environment with limited resources, experience in Sub-Saharan Africa or Botswana an asset.

Experience in training and managing aspects of TB, HIV and opportunistic infections, with at least 12 months practical experience.
