Consulting

Science Policy, Public Health

Consulting is not necessarily a discipline that relies on your expertise in science per se; rather consulting firms value your training to manage complex issues from varying perspectives. The measure of finding qualified talents is how well potential employees deal with case studies (for more on case studies look here). Highly regarded are quantitative skills, analytical skills, problem-solving ability, communications skills, creativity, flexibility, the ability to think quickly under pressure, listening skills, business acumen, keen insight, interpersonal skills, and the ability to synthesize findings. Taken from the Website of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics: “Firms that offer management, scientific, and technical consulting services influence how businesses, governments, and institutions make decisions. Often working behind the scenes, these firms offer technical expertise, information, contacts, and tools that clients cannot provide themselves. They then work with their clients to provide a service or solve a problem. … This industry is projected to be the fastest growing, with employment increasing 83 percent over the 2008–18 period, and is one of the highest paying.” (US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics).
