The Diversity Committee is interested in promoting and retaining diversity in the biomedical postdoctoral community. The Diversity Committee is inclusive of all minorities and underrepresented postdocs including but not limited to African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, women, people with disabilities and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer/questioning (LGBTQ) community. Our goals are three-fold:
- To provide information about opportunities (fellowships, conferences, programs) for postdocs related to issues of diversity
- To connect postdocs with organizations and opportunities to give back to their communities
- To provide a social and support network for underrepresented members of the biomedical postdoctoral community

Background
The Diversity Committee of the Biomedical Postdoctoral Council (BPC) at the University of Pennsylvania is an organization of diverse postdoctoral scholars. This organization strives to distribute the wealth of information for minority and underrepresented postdoctoral scholars on conferences, workshops, seminars, grants, travel awards, etc. that are directly relevant to this unique population.
NIH and most other grant funding agencies define minority as: Historically, individuals who have been found to be underrepresented in biomedical or behavioral research include, but are not limited to, U.S. citizens who are Hispanic Americans, African Americans, Native Americans (including Alaska Natives), and natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands. However, the Diversity Committee would like to be inclusive of other minorities and underrepresented postdocs, such as women and people with disabilities.
