Center for Biomedical Imaging

Operational Support

The department is committed to providing support to Investigators and pilot studies. Please read below for more information.

Protocol Development (Prodev) funding:

The Radiology Research Department is a proud contributor of Prodev funding to UPENN Investigators for groundbreaking research initiatives across all imaging modalities.

Prodev funding is awarded to assist Investigators with the financial issues often encountered when applying for future research funding. Awards assist Investigators with obtaining preliminary, necessary data for future grant submissions/funding opportunities.

Protocol Development Review Process

Prodev reviews will be conducted on a quarterly basis:

March 15th

June 15th

September 15th

December 15th

The reviewers will review the applications and supporting documents within two weeks of the review date.

Prodev awards will be given to Investigators who demonstrates high scientific merit and potential for generating new extramural funding for the project.

Types of Prodev Awards

The prodev awards are broken into two separate tiers:

Tier one (T1): Routine access to calendar. Five hours of imaging awarded for the initial ProDev application. Reapplication is required to obtain an additional five hours of imaging. Reapplication must indicate how many subjects have been scanned to date, and provide an explanation of why the additional data is required in order to generate preliminary data for future funding applications. Only one reapplication allowed.

Tier two (T2): Limited access to calendar (booking only allowed 72 hours prior to scanner time). Ten hours of imaging awarded for the initial ProDev application. Reapplication is required to obtain an additional ten hours of imaging. Reapplication must indicate how many subjects have been scanned to date, and provide an explanation of why the additional data is required in order to generate preliminary data for future funding applications. Only one reapplication allowed.

A Radiology Research Coordinator may be included in the award.

Protocol Development Oversight

Six months into the prodev award, the committee will monitor the progress of the study. If the study demonstrates inactivity, a warning notice of closure will be sent to the study team.

You are expected to follow Good Clinical Practices (GCP) throughout the conduct of your study protocol.

Protocol Development Inactivity

Six months into the prodev award, the committee will monitor the progress of the study. If the study demonstrates inactivity, a warning notice of closure will be sent to the study team.

The PI can submit a justification letter to the committee regarding inactivity and request a waiver to keep the study open. Response to the committee’s notice must be in writing within seven business days of being contacted by the Prodev committee staff.
