Frank A. Welsh, Ph.D.

Frank A. Welsh, PhD

Emeritus Professor of Neursurgery

Dr. Welsh's laboratory investigates the causes, mechanisms, and treatments of brain damage resulting from stroke and trauma. His recent studies have focused on the mechanisms by which head injury is diminished in brains that have been preconditioned with potassium chloride. Another major research effort conducted by his laboratory focuses on the vulnerability of the brain after trauma to a second insult of low oxygen or lack of adequate blood flow. Dr. Welsh's research has shed important light on the molecular mechanism of brain injury and its prevention, which are fundamental to the development of effective therapies for stroke and trauma.
