Douglas H. Smith, MD, Director, Penn Center for Brain Injury and Repair,
Professor of Neurosurgery. For more than 15 years, Dr. Smith has devoted his
full-time efforts to traumatic brain injury research. He has been an active member of the
National Neurotrauma Society and currently serves as an officer. Dr. Smith's laboratory
investigates the diagnosis and effects of diffuse axonal injury (also called shearing or
white matter injury) that commonly occurs due to brain trauma. In addition, his
laboratory studies the link between traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative
diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.
