Mentor / Program Assistant Positions
Previous summer program participants are encouraged to apply for a Mentor / Program Assistant Position:
Job Description:
- Review and teach basic laboratory methods, including: pipetting & PH, weighing, reagent preparation, DNA isolation, sterile technique, and gels

Simplify and present advanced environmental materials to high school students in classroom lectures

Meet weekly with student to discuss his or her research progress. After reviewing student’s daily lab notebooks and weekly reports, write a weekly summary of each student’s progress

Advise students about their scientific reports and presentations

Assist the Program Coordinator with logistic and administrative tasks to ensure program’s success

Meet weekly with the Program Director to discuss progress
Sample Lecture Topics for Mentors:
Laboratory techniques
Molecular methods
DNA isolation
Protein purification, protein determination assays
Qualifications
-
Completed at least one year of college and science classes, preferably biology, environmental science, chemistry, and physics.

Must be enthusiastic and comfortable with teaching introductory science topics, mentoring a diverse group of students, planning educational programs, analyzing data, and coordinating administrative tasks.

Previous participation in a related program is a plus.
