Training Opportunities

Translational Research Training Program in Environmental Health Sciences

The CEET Training grant, Translational Research Training Program in Environmental Health Sciences (Co-PIs Trevor Penning and Harry Ischiropoulos), is funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and currently supports two predoctoral fellows and two postdocs.

Predoctoral Applicants
Pre-doctoral applicants must conduct thesis work in translational environmental health sciences and will be appointed to the training grant based on the following:

(a) enrollment in to the CEET Certificate Program in Environmental Health Sciences (or a willingness to enroll in the Program) :
(b) GRE’s and GPA;
(c) letter of nomination from proposed thesis advisor;
(d) personal statement; and
(e) interview with the Executive Committee.

Training in epidemiology and translational research is required for training grant fellows. In each year of thesis work, one additional course is selected from: Measurement of Health in Epidemiology; Fundamentals of Patient Oriented Research; or Disease Measurement. Pre-doctoral applicants would be supported for one year pre-thesis and for up to two years of thesis research.

All applicants, predoctoral and postdoctoral, must be a US citizen or permanent resident.

To be considered for a training grant fellowship, predoctoral applicants should submit the following to webster@upenn.edu:

Postdoctoral Applicants

Postdoctoral applicants must conduct full-time research in translational environmental health sciences and are appointed to the training grant based on:

(a) for internal candidates, a letter of nomination from their postdoctoral mentor and/or clinical division chief; applications from external candidates require three letters of recommendation, one of which should be from their current postdoctoral mentor (if applicable) and/or clinical division chief.
(b) personal statement;
(c) description of the research project; and
(d) an interview with the Executive Committee.

The postdoctoral research training is extensive and requires individuals to: (a) take at least one course per semester from either the CEET Certificate Program or the additional courses offered to pre-doctoral trainees; (b) participate in all training grant- related activities; (c) complete both the compulsory and optional elements of the intramural training program offered by Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs; and (d) attain additional mentoring from the Career Development Core of the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology. Post-doctoral applicants would be supported for up to two years.

Postdoctoral fellows with PhDs from a broad range of basic science disciplines (environmental health, pharmacology, toxicology, cell and molecular biology) who wish to conduct advanced translational research on a clinical problem related to environmental health with a training grant preceptor are eligible for support. Clinicians with MD degrees who have completed residency and fellowship training in a relevant clinical specialty (e.g. Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, OB/GYN and Pediatrics) and who seek basic science research training compatible with the mission of the Program are encouraged to apply.

Postdoctoral Applicants should submit the following to webster@upenn.edu.
