Developmental Core: HIV/AIDS Faculty Partnership/Mentoring Program

Mission | Pilot Awards | Mentoring Program | Personnel | Contact Info

The Partnership/Mentorship program of the developmental Core of the Penn CFAR is dedicated to providing short-term mentorship for applicants of developmental core awards. This program is designed to assist the faculty member applicants and junior non-faculty co-investigators who have applied to CFAR developmental funds in launching a successful career as independent investigators in HIV related research.

All individuals who apply are linked with a senior CFAR investigator carefully chosen by Drs. Tebas and Montaner. This partnership/mentorship complements traditional mentoring provided by the direct scientific supervisor of the applicant and lasts for 18 months, or until first NIH grant submission.

All partners/mentors are influential and experienced CFAR faculty familiar with the CFAR of the University of Pennsylvania and the services available in its cores. They are recognized and mature scientists who are highly respected in both the local and international scientific community with clear records of accomplishment in research as well as in training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Partnership/Mentorship Seminar Series

The Developmental Core also sponsors workshops for junior investigators and awardees. The Pre-Pilot Application Workshop helps new investigators familiarize themselves with the CFAR cores and services. Pilot Feedback Workshops provide a venue for junior investigators to prepare, rehearse, and present their scientific work for open feedback from their peers and other members of the CFAR community. And Pilot Highlights Seminars feature two previous pilot awardees to present their completed research to the Penn CFAR community in a formal, seminar setting.

And in May 2012 Dr. James Kahn visited the Penn CFAR to deliver two lectures on the value of mentoring.

Community Feedback

At the end of the academic year two ongoing or completed pilot awards, selected by the Director and Co-Director of the Developmental Core, will be presented to the whole CFAR community in a formal seminar session. This creates visibility of the pilot awards program within faculty and the pilot awardees to the rest of the CFAR community and to create a broader forum that can provide feedback to investigators with regards to future directions for the research.
