HIV/TB research questions are being explored in conjunction with the CDC-funded Tuberculosis Trials Consortium (TBTC). The DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center is conducting trials with health departments in Washington, DC and suburban Maryland counties. Additionally the Washington, DC VAMC is supporting collaborative research in the TBTC with partners at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town, South Africa. The lead investigators in Cape Town are Andreas Diacon, Mark Cotton and Anneke Hesseling.

1. HIV/TB Co-infection Projects:
"A Double-Blind Randomized Placebo Controlled Trial for Prevention of Tuberculosis-IRIS with NSAIDs in HIV-Infected Adults".   Ongoing protocol in South Africa to carry out a randomized study of piroxicam to prevent IRIS in subjects starting ART and anti-TB therapy simultaneously.
