Continuing Care and Assessment Division

This Continuing Care and Assessment Division develops and evaluates innovative approaches to enhancing and extending addiction treatment in “real world” programs and settings.  Historically, the Division concentrated on the acute or intensive phase of treatment, including the development of standardized intake assessment instruments to aid in treatment planning and research, and the effectiveness of various initial levels of care (e.g., inpatient vs. outpatient detoxification and rehabilitation).  However, at this point, the Division has shifted to the development and evaluation of adaptive treatment and extended care models, in which regular assessments of patients’ progress are used to guide ongoing modifications to initial treatment and continuing care.  The goal of this work is to develop better protocols to manage substance use disorders over time.
