Martin E. Franklin, Ph.D., Associate Professor
Clinical Director, CTSA

Ph.D., Clinical Psychology, 1993 University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI
M.S., Experimental Psychology, 1990, Villanova University, Villanova, PA
e-mail Dr. Franklin at marty@mail.med.upenn.edu

Dr. Franklin received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Rhode Island in 1993. Dr. Franklin joined the Center's faculty in 1992 upon completion of clinical internship at the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute. His scholarly publications include scientific articles and book chapters on the treatment of adult and pediatric OCD, social phobia, trichotillomania, and readiness for behavior change. He was a member of the Expert Consensus Panel for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that assisted with the development of treatment guidelines for adult and pediatric OCD.  Dr. Franklin has been a co-investigator and clinical supervisor on NIMH-funded randomized controlled trials in pediatric OCD, adult OCD, and social phobia, and the Principal Investigator of a recently completed NIMH-funded treatment development grant examining the efficacy of CBT for pediatric trichotillomania.  Dr. Franklin is a Scientific Advisory Board Member and Chair of the Research Committee for the Trichotillomania Learning Center, a national organization devoted to disseminating information about trichotillomania and its treatment, is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Anxiety Disorders, and has also served as a grant reviewer for NIMH and SAMHSA.  Dr. Franklin is currently PI on an ongoing multi-center NIMH-funded study examining the efficacy of CBT augmentation for children and adolescents who have already evidenced a partial response to SRI pharmacotherapy; this study is being conducted in concert with Duke University (J. S. March, PI) and Brown University (H. L. Leonard, PI).   Dr. Franklin and Dr. Scott Compton (Duke University) also recently received funding from the Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA) to develop and examine the effects of a manualized treatment involving Habit Reversal Training (HRT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for teens and young adults with chronic tic disorders (CTDs).
