CVI Strategic Funding Initiatives
Periodically, generally in preparation for multi-disciplinary awards (PO-1’s,
SCCORs, Roadmap Initiatives, etc.), the Penn CVI leadership will issue strategically-targeted Request
for Proposals (RFPs) as need arises and as opportunities present.
Any Penn faculty member working in the strategically-targeted
area, or a closely related area, is encouraged to apply for this funding. These
funds are not restricted to investigators with a track record of cardiovascular
investigation. Applications from research scientists who have not
historically focused their studies in cardiovascular science are encouraged to apply for funding. Funding amounts will vary depending upon the RFP, but generally range from $25,000 per year to $200,000 per year.
For more information, please contact the Penn CVI Business Office.

FOCUS – Penn Cardiovascular Institute
Medical Student Fellowship in Women's Cardiovascular Health
Application Deadline: June 30, 2008
How to Apply:
Send applications either electronically or by mail to Patricia Scott (see below).
Applications must include the following information:
1. Name, address, telephone number, pager, email address, and preferred method of contact
2. Your CV
3. A brief (one-page) synopsis of the planned project and selected mentor
Fellowship Description:
The FOCUS-Penn CVI Medical Student Fellowship in Women's Cardiovascular Health, sponsored by the Penn Cardiovascular Institute,
offers medical students funding for six months to work full time with a faculty mentor conducting clinical or basic science research centered
around issues related to women's cardiovascular health. Students work with an experienced faculty member actively engaged in research related to cardiovascular health .
The purpose of this experience is to enable medical students to learn "hands-on" research and collaborative skills, to gain knowledge of cardiovascular aspects of women's health,
and to work on a publication or article generated from the research. The fellowship may begin as early as July 2008.
Eligibility: Any University of Pennsylvania medical students (male or female) who have completed their clinical clerkships are eligible and encouraged to apply.
Funding: A monthly stipend of $1,250 will be provided to student recipients, totaling $7500 for the six-month fellowship term.
Faculty mentors receive additional funds (a one-time payment of $1500) to support research expenses and other costs associated with their mentoring of
the student-fellows over the 6-month period. These FOCUS funds may be applied to a 6 month period of a longer research experience whose remaining
time is supported from other sources.
Mentorship: Identification of potential faculty mentors by interested students is required prior to application for this research experience.
Mentors must be full time Penn faculty with solidly established research programs.
Credit/Requirements: This Fellowship opportunity has been designed to be a scholarly pursuit rather than a workstudy experience.
Medical students who complete the Fellowship will fulfill the Scholarly Pursuit requirement (3 credits). This experience will be graded on a pass/fail
basis and will be recorded on the student transcript. Any student who is awarded as a FOCUS Fellow will work with their Penn faculty mentor to
prepare a formal initial project proposal which must be reviewed and approved by the FOCUS Director of Research Programs.
A progress report will be required midway in the fellowship period, and a final report will be due at the completion of the six-month experience.
Questions: Contact Patricia Scott, pscott3@mail.med.upenn.edu or 215-898-3562.

Request for Information (RFI):
To Solicit Ideas for Common Fund / Roadmap Trans-NIH Strategic Initiatives »
Release Date: April 22, 2008
Response Date: June 2, 2008
The NIH is seeking input from the scientific community, health professionals, patient advocates,
and the general public about innovative and cross - cutting initiatives to be funded through the NIH Common Fund.
The Common Fund / Roadmap supports programs that address fundamental knowledge gaps, develop transformative tools and technologies,
and/or foster innovative approaches to complex problems. These programs are supported for a limited duration of 5–10 years.
Long-term support is not consistent with the intent of the Common Fund / Roadmap.
Collecting these ideas is an initial step in the process of identifying a new cohort of Common Fund / Roadmap programs for Fiscal Year 2011.
This RFI provides an opportunity for respondents to submit their own ideas. The NIH expects to spend $30 - 50 million per year
from within the currently projected Roadmap budget for new 5-year initiatives.
