Program Units

Consistent with the NIH Roadmap, programs have been developed within the Penn CVI to promote multi-disciplinary collaborations between basic and translational scientists and clinical investigators. A cornerstone of the Penn CVI strategic plan are Penn CVI Research Programs in key strategic areas spanning a basic science discipline to clinical research and populations sciences. Each CVI program unit is led by a basic and/or translational scientist and a clinical investigator. CVI faculty members are encouraged to attend monthly or bi-monthly meetings held by each program unit with the overall goal of facilitating cardiovascular research projects focused in a particular area. Members will receive notification of Program Unit meetings and as well as the CVI sponsored seminar series.

Greater Communication

The Penn CVI promotes communication between faculty members performing cardiovascular research at the University of Pennsylvania as well as the broader cardiovascular research community across the world. The Penn CVI website has been designed with this goal in mind.

All Members and Affiliate Members are listed on the Penn CVI website. Each member receives a biosketch including a description of specific research programs. In addition, each member is listed on the Research Program Unit(s) page(s) of their choice. The entire website is queriable, including a dedicated CVI Members query, so that members of the Penn community as well as cardiovascular scientists and clinical investigators outside of Penn can identify Penn faculty members with specific areas of research expertise. The Penn CVI website includes a calendar of Institute-sponsored activities including a list of relevant seminars across the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Health system.

Administrative Assistance

Another benefit of Penn CVI membership is access to the Penn CVI Business Office (Grants and Contracts Administration) and assistance with Regulatory Affairs. The Penn CVI administration includes staff with expertise in all aspects of research with particular focus on multi-project multidisciplinary grants and clinical grants administration. The Penn CVI administrative staff has partnered with the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania Office of Human Research to facilitate the pre- and post-approval process of clinical grants administration and to ensure compliance with the OHR.

The administrative staff of the Penn CVI will serve as a resource for how to submit Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Investigational New Device (IND) protocols. The Penn CVI administration also partners with the Perelman School of Medicine-sponsored Office of Corporate Alliances to assist in the contracting process with industrial partners.

Subsidized Access to CVI Core Labs

Penn CVI Members receive subsidized access to Penn CVI Core Laboratories. To facilitate cardiovascular research, the Penn CVI has established multiple core laboratories that support the function of basic, translational and clinical cardiovascular investigation. Subsidized access to Penn CVI core laboratories and facilities is determined by the individual Core Laboratory Director based upon programmatic need and availability.
