Accessing and Using Network Connections

Instructions

We have recently rebuilt the DNA Sequencing file server. The IP address of the server is different . To connect to the server for the first time, please delete all previous aliases and shortcuts to the server. A complete list of instructions on how to connect from a Macintosh and PC is listed below.

You can communicate with the sequencing facility by e-mail:

Access for All Macintosh Users (OS 9 and Below)

Macintosh computers running System 7.6 or later can use AppleShare to
connect to our server over the Internet, even if they are not connected directly
to PennNet.

You will need to contact the facility and choose a user/folder name and a
password for your folder. We will put your results in your folder to which only
you have access. Because of the large number of users and various users with
the same investigator, you must indicate on each Sequencing Request Form that
you want results put into a folder, and give the folder name.

Results will be kept in your folder for up to one month. You may delete files
from your folder when you are finished with them. All results are also archived
by the facility if you need them. Note that the purpose of the server is to enable
you to copy files and disconnect when done. Please do not double-click the
files on the server!

  1. Select "Chooser" from the Apple menu.
  2. Click on the Apple Share icon in the upper-left corner, then click on the
"Server IP Address" button near the lower-right corner.
  3. In the input box which appears, type in " dnaseq.med.upenn.edu" and click
    "Connect".
  4. When prompted, type in your lab folder name and password and click
    "OK" or "Connect".
  5. Choose Users. Double click on Users. Scroll through list of folders, and double click on your folder. Double click on Public, and then Drop Box. Drag data files to your Desktop.
  6. Close the Chooser window. You must trash the Users Hard Drive icon from your Desktop.

On future occasions, you can skip the above steps by selecting “Users” from the "Recent Servers" sub-menu under the Apple menu.

Viewing chromatograms

Use EditView freeware available on ABI website to view and edit the chromatograms. You can also e-mail us for getting EditView.

For Macintosh OS X

  1. Go to the Go menu on the top of the screen and drag to connect to server
  2. In the Address text field, type “dnaseq.med.upenn.edu”, then click OK
  3. When prompted, type in your lab folder name and password and click OK
  4. Choose Users. Double click on Users. Scroll through list of folders, and double click on your folder. Double click on Public, and then Drop Box. Drag data files to your Desktop.
  5. Close the “Connect to Server” Window.
  6. When finished, trash the Users Hard Drive icon from your Desktop into the trash on the dock. The trash will turn into an eject sign like you are ejecting a CD. Drop the folder over that eject sign and you have successfully disconnected from the server.

For PC Users

Use FTP to access your folder. “FileZilla” is a free downloadable software.

Other Internet Access

Anyone with access to the Internet can copy their results by FTP, using Fetch for Macintosh, WS-FTP for Windows or other file transfer software. To do this, set up a user name and password, as mentioned above.

Protocol for downloading FileZilla

  1. Go to http://www.snapfiles.com/get/filezilla.html
  2. Download WS_FTP LE, go through installation process
  3. Put “dnaseq.med.upenn.edu” as Host Address
  4. Put your folder name as Username and password in password box, click connect
  5. For recent results, double-click Public and then Drop Box
  6. Click on results and use arrows to move results from our server to your computer (create a folder to put results in)
