Thomas J. Guzzo, MD, MPH

Thomas J. Guzzo, MD, MPH, is an active urologist at Pennsylvania Hospital and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, as well as an attending urologist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Guzzo is dedicated to mentoring and training the next generation of leaders in the field and serves as the Associate Program Director of Penn’s Urology Residency.

As a recognized leader in urology, Dr. Guzzo is a frequent contributor to peer-reviewed journals and other publications, including being author of one of the most highly referenced textbooks in the field, Penn Clinical Manual of Urology. Along with several colleagues, Dr. Guzzo published the first national study of subjective financial burden (SFB), defined as hardships and distress patients face due to cancer diagnosis and treatment in Urologic Oncology. Their results showed that the majority of those sampled experienced SFB, which can have a dramatic impact on treatment, care, long-term outcomes, and psychological effects. This study examined an often-overlooked factor that contributes to cancer-related financial burden and speaks to the Abramson Cancer Center’s efforts to ensure that world-class care is available and accessible to all.

Dr. Guzzo earned his MD from Temple University and his MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed an internship in general surgery and residency in urology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a fellowship in urologic oncology at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute of Johns Hopkins University.
