Mission Statement
Faculty Affairs and Professional Development (FAPD) works with the leadership, faculty and administrators of the Perelman School of Medicine and the Health System to support an overarching goal of PENN Medicine - the implementation of the highest standards of excellence in academic medicine. The mission of FAPD is to support this goal by facilitating the recruitment and appointment, promotion, and retention of distinguished faculty.
We fulfill this mission by a commitment to:
- Overseeing and facilitating proactive administration of all aspects of policies and processes relating to faculty recruitments and appointments, reappointments and promotions and other faculty employment actions
- Developing, interpreting, communicating and administering University and Perelman School of Medicine policies related to faculty employment
- Ensuring compliance with all applicable policies, procedures and external regulations relating to faculty employment, including affirmative action/equal employment opportunity policies
- Supporting faculty careers from appointment through retirement through Advance, the faculty professional development program and other mentoring initiatives
- Serving as official resource for faculty data
- Supporting initiatives relating to faculty diversity
- Serving as a liaison and a resource to other schools and offices of the Perelman School of Medicine, Health System and University

Roy D. Bloom, MBBCh
Professor of Medicine at the Hospital of the University of PennsylvaniaDr. Bloom is a leader in the field of transplantation nephrology. His research focuses on the outcomes of HCV infected patients undergoing kidney transplantation, the donor and recipient outcomes after live donor transplantation, chronic kidney disease after non-renal organ transplantation and clinical trials of novel immunosuppressive drugs. He has contributed peer-reviewed publications in high impact journals including the American Journal of Transplantation, Transplantation and The New England Journal of Medicine. He is known as a dedicated and compassionate clinician and for leadership of the Penn Kidney Transplant Program. He is a guest editor for Current Opinions in Hypertension and Nephrology and an active reviewer for a number of journals including American Journal of Transplantation, Transplantation, Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and The American Journal of Kidney Diseases. He is a member of a Drug Safety Monitoring Board of a clinical trial for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Dr. Bloom is an enthusiastic and effective educator and mentor of medical students, residents and colleagues. He has been a member of a select group of transplant physicians and surgeons selected as faculty for the American Society of Transplantation Annual Fellows Symposium. He is an active member of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Nephrology. Since 2008, he has been a member of the American Society of Transplantation’s Clinical Trials Advisory Council and in 2009 he chaired the Council.
