Gastrointestinal Cancer Genetics Program

GI Cancer Risk Evaluation Program (GI CREP)

The Gastrointestinal Cancer Risk Evaluation Program (GI-CREP) offers comprehensive evaluation for people who are at increased risk of developing gastrointestinal polyps and/or cancer (such as colon, gastric, or pancreatic cancer).  Depending on the family history of cancer, this increased risk may be associated with hereditary, gastrointestinal cancer and/or polyposis syndromes.  Although most cancers occur by chance and at older ages, signs of hereditary cancer rist in a family include:

  • Multiple relatives with the same type of cancer
  • Early age of diagnosis of colon polyps, colon cancer, or another gastrointestinal cancer
  • Multiple relatives with colon polyps
  • Individuals who have more than one form of cancer
  • A pattern of cancer types that resembles a known hereditary cancer syndrome

Through a combined appointment with a physician specializing in gastrointestinal cancer genetics and a certified genetic counselor from the Abramson Cancer Center, you will undergo a comprehensive evaluation of your personal and family medical history.  If appropriate, genetic testing options will be discussed and offered as well.  At the completion of your evaluation, we will provide an expert assessment of your gastrointestinal cancer risk, as well as a plan for managing your risk.

During your initial visit our specialists help answer questions such as:

  • What is my level of risk for developing gastrointestinal cancer?
  • How can I protect myself?
  • What about my family members?
  • Would genetic testing be helpful?

As part of your evaluation, our specialists will provide:

  • A review of your medical history
  • A physical examination and additional testing, if necessary
  • Genetic counseling and the option for genetic testing, when appropriate
  • Discussion of your personal risk and recommended risk-reduction strategies
  • A plan for ongoing monitoring for early cancer detection and personal risk reduction
