Gastroenterology Elective

Areas of Learning

The resident is expected to broaden and deepen their knowledge base during the elective. Areas that residents should be familiar with include (as outlined by the Federated Council on Internal Medicine):

Common Clinical Presentations:
Abdominal distension   Heartburn
Abdominal pain   Hematemesis
Abnormal liver function test   Indigestion
Anorectal discomfort, bleeding, or pruritis   Iron-deficiency
Anorexia, weight loss   Jaundice
Ascites   Liver failure
Constipation   Malnutrition
Diarrhea   Melena
Excess intestinal gas   Nausea, vomiting
Fecal incontinence   Noncardiac chest pain
Food intolerance   Swallowing dysfunction
Gastrointestinal bleeding    
Procedural Skills:
Paracentesis   Primary interpretation of tests
Placement of NG tubes   Test for occult blood
Ordering and Understanding Tests:
Examination of stool for ova, parasites   Fecal electrolytes
Qualitative stool fat   Fecal osmolarity
24 hr. esophageal   Gallbladder radionuclide testing
pH monitoring
Assays for H. pylori
  Gastric analysis, gastrin, secreting stimulation
Bernstein Test   Viral hepatitis serology
Bx of GI mucosa
Blood tests for autoimmune, cholestatic,
  Lactose and hydrogen breath tests
genetic liver diseases   Laparoscopy Liver bx
Colonoscopy Computed tomography, MRI, US of the abdomen   Mesenteric angiography
PTC scans of gastric emptying
Contrast studies (UGI, SBFT, BE)   Serum B12 and Schilling tests
D-xylose test   EGD Flexible sigmoidoscopy
ERCP Esophageal manometry    
Evaluation of the Learners:

All residents will be evaluated by their preceptors mid month and at the end of the month.

Evaluation of the Curriculum:

Feedback from the residents will be sought.
