Family Caregiver resources for financial planning and management

September 2015

Financial planning for patients and families is an essential component of living with dementia.  The Geriatric Education Center of Greater Philadelphia has developed an annotated list of resources which may be helpful:

1. National Institute on Aging: Legal and Financial Planning for People with Alzheimers

Working with the Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Referral Center( ADEAR), the National Institute on Aging has created an easy to understand guide to legal terms you are likely to encounter.  They include links to sites for more specific information

2. Alzheimer’s Association: Planning ahead, legal plans for persons with Alzheimer’s Disease

This is an excellent step-by-step guide.  It includes clear summary boxes of important information.  Paired with #1, this is an excellent place to start.

3. Alzheimer’s Association: Financial Planning for Alzheimer’s Patients

This document includes summary short videos of actual patients, then goes on to describe elements of financial planning.

4. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

This is the Federal Agency charged with protecting against financial abuse of elders.  The site links to several publications about the recognition and protection from financial abuse.
