Melissa Gartenberg Livney, PsyD
Melissa Gartenberg Livney, Psy.D. joined the Section of Geriatric Psychiatry in 2007. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. She completed her predoctoral internship at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY. She consistently customized her training experience emphasize work with older adults. Her dissertation was a study of the role of psychologists who practice in long-term care settings.
She currently provides individual psychotherapy to older adults with a range of difficulties including depression, anxiety, and transitions that often occur in later life such as retirement, physical difficulties, memory loss, and grief. She also works within the PENN Memory Center to provide a psychoeducational group for caregivers of family members with dementia. She is currently developing a research protocol that will follow older adults over the course of three years to learn more about the interactions between psychological distress, resilience, and cognition. This study includes a neuropsychological evaluation as well as an assessment of distressing life events, mood, coping style, personality characteristics, and associated biomarkers.
