Microbicide Trials Unit
The Penn Prevention Clinical Trials Unit operates in collaboration with the newly created Microbicide Trials Network (MTN) whose mission is to reduce the sexual transmission of HIV through the evaluation of microbicide products. The MTU as part of the Penn Prevention Clinical Trials Unit will conduct scientifically rigorous and ethically sound clinical trials that will support licensure of topical microbicide products.
What is a Microbicide?
A microbicide is an antimicrobial agent formulated for application to the surface of the vagina and/or rectum for the prevention of HIV transmission during sexual intercourse. This prevention strategy is urgently needed throughout the world because many individuals at high risk of HIV infection cannot or do not use condoms with every act of sexual intercourse.
